You Dont Get No View Like You Do From The Top Of The World

Flushed with the confidence of a cricket fan who has seen England get to the top of the test rankings and his team towards the top end of the County Championship. I was arguing with a mate earlier in the week about the merits of cricket.

In contrast to my attack on tennis last week see: http://www.blogger.com/goog_2096540392  there is very little I prefer in this world than sitting watching cricket on a lovely summer afternoon.

Granted we don’t get many of them – certainly not this summer (the sun tan lotion I bought in May for all the days I was going to spend watching leather hit willow has barely been used) but if we did, then it would be fantastic.

Now, my mate is largely a cricket philistine. It can’t be a great sport, he said “because American’s don’t play it” and because it “wasn’t truly global.”

Now even if I think he is wrong (he was told this, forcibly) and leaving aside the fact that something can be nichÄ— and still fabulous, as anyone who has heard for example the Wildhearts first album can attest and also that he is a non league football fan who didn’t spot the irony in claiming that something didn’t have mass appeal so couldn’t be worth watching; he does have a point in one aspect of what he said.

When Cricket has a world Cup as it did this year, there are 16 teams in it. There are only eight test playing Nations (England, Australia, South Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, West Indies, New Zealand and Bangladesh) and they all play each other.

Contrast this to football: In preparation (honestly, they aren’t just thrown together, these things!)  for writing this blog I had a quick look at the FIFA Website and according to their official rankings there are 203 teams playing International Football. San Marino prop the rest up.

All of which goes to prove why we at Football Business don’t sell cricket franchises, I suppose. Simply nothing can compete with football in the world’s sporting conscience.

We will, as I have mentioned before happily sort out franchises anywhere in the world. So if you want to start a league somewhere there’s a pitch and you have the desire to run one then give us a call.

And if you want us to bore you with some cricket chat, we could probably help there too.

Anyone For Tennis?

It won’t have escaped anyone’s notice but football is back.

The championship is in full swing (although there’s fans of one or two clubs here in the Football Business office that wish it wasn’t) and The Premier League joined in at the weekend (nice unbeaten start for us, thank you very much…even though we are physical apparently, according to Mr Villas Boas.)

Now, you might think that the Premier League or Football League has little to teach you when it comes to running your very own community 5 and 6 a side leagues (unless you bring the overhead height rule in to suit my boys…) but you’d be wrong.

And it’s all to do with tennis.

With due apologies to anyone reading this that likes tennis, tennis is not a sport that resonates often in the public conscience in this country. Apart, that is, from two weeks at the end of June, start of July.

Wimbledon fortnight.

Now there are people like me, who wouldn’t watch tennis if Anna Kournikova was playing Martina Hingis in my garden (ok I might have a look just out of curiosity), but in those two weeks tennis clubs up and down the country will be packed out with people playing – and although I am sure these places make a good living the rest of the year, a month after Andy Murray has been knocked out in the semi finals they are back down to the hardcore.

So why am I telling you this?

Simple. If you aren’t out doing all your promotion right now then why not? Just think, if tennis (which is at best a minority sport) can do as well as it does on the back of Wimbledon, just think what you can do when it comes to football. The National Game that is popular even in the worst of times.

There will never be a better time to get teams into your league. The summer holidays are coming to an end, the football season is starting and people will be desperate to join up and play a game of 5 and 6 a side football again.

All you have to do is make sure they know you are there providing them the opportunity. And if you need any help with that, get in touch with us at Football Business

Now, anyone for tennis? Where’s my strawberries and cream?

Can Current Affairs Teach Us Anything About Your Leagues

At Football Business this week we have been – like the overwhelming majority of people in this country - shocked and appalled by the images we have seen unfolding on the news.

Whatever discussion there should be about the societal problems that lead us to this point should be for the future. For now, we can all say it is an inescapable fact that everyone knows the difference between right and wrong.

Mercifully amongst our League providing partners the terrible scenes have resulted as - far as we know – in just one cancellation.

Our Franchisees reported no real problems and all the leagues they run went ahead as planned.

There aren’t many lessons that a Franchisee can learn from these troubled times, except perhaps, this one:

Discipline at your league is something that you have to take more seriously than arguably any other issue.

Any problems regarding a player, or a team simply have to be rooted out immediately if you want your league to be happy, fun, and above all else, profitable.

You must – of you go yourself – make sure that everyone is happy, and if you don’t referee then you must establish a good relationship with your official down at your league so that they can your eyes and ears.

We insist that your partner league provider has the strongest discipline structures available in 5 and 6 a side football. We do this for three reasons: 1) to protect you 2) to make the league fun for all the players and 3) so you earn lots of money.

This is your business. And we – no matter what goes on in the outside world – want you to do well.

Football Business and you – it’s a perfect match.
